The electronic rain gauge isn't for everyone, though. For some the very most simple rain gauge is sufficient. This may consist solely of a graduated tube that collects rain. Nothing fancy about that! But there are some decorative holders you can buy that make a great addition to your garden.

One thing to keep in mind about rain gauges is that they need to be durable. All weather rain gauges are important so that they can stand up to anything mother nature might throw at them. In many cases a plastic gauge is preferable over a glass one.

Many all weather rain gauges can track measurements of all types of precipitation. Rain, snow, sleet and hail can all be collected and measured. With frozen precipitation it is usually taken indoors after collecting to be melted and measured.

Because of the nature of the outdoor rain gauge, it needs to be weather proof. Extreme weather such as hail can break a glass gauge. Those set in some metals may rust, meaning you will have difficulty in taking the reading or possibly in removing the gauge itself for dumping.
