The Digital Rain Gauge

Measuring the level of rainfall is done for a variety of reasons. Of course you have the important reasons, such as for agricultural or meteorological purposes and in foretelling drought or floods, and other more scientific or research oriented purposes, but these aren't the only reasons for measuring rain.

Many children who are studying the weather in their science class have the opportunity to make and work with weather instruments, such as a rain gauge. A rain gauge is a fairly simple device that is made with a funnel that collect rain and directs it into a cylinder where it can be measured. This is easy and fun for kids to make and use, whatever the level of its accuracy.

For those who are interested in more precise measurements, purchasing a rain gauge is probably a better idea. This way you have specific instructions in front of you on how to set it up and you know that it is all measured and made properly.

There are quite a few different types of rain gauges that you can choose from. A standard rain gauge is just like that mentioned above. Sometimes the whole device is in a larger container in order to capture any spillage, which can then be measured as well.

For these basic models you place them in your garden in a place that will not collect falling leaves or rocks and where there is not likely to be any dripping or splashing as from a tree that will give an inaccurate reading. To check the rainfall level, you simply go outside and take a look at what marking the water level has reached.

These rain gauges work, of course, but for those who really want to keep close tabs on the rain there are much more advanced ways to do it. A digital rain gauge provides a more modern read out and display to give you your information. It has sensors that can tell you just exactly how much water is in the gauge.

The innovation doesn't stop here, though. Many digital rain gauges are remote, meaning that the gauge itself is outside, but you can see the reading from inside your home. This is, obviously, extremely convenient, as you don't have to go out in the rain to find out how much of it has fallen!

You can purchase a digital rain gauge that is for that purpose alone, or you can get a complete weather station which will include a rain gauge as well. In that case, the information will be displayed along with other information about the weather including temperature, wind speed and direction, air pressure etc. depending on what model you choose and how much information you want.

A digital rain gauge is a great way to keep track of rainfall. A basic model isn't even very expensive at all.
